Exchange Students from
Zagreb, Zadar and Novo mesto
in
project "The Health of Kidneys – The Choice Is Yours"

The second exchange took place on Thursday, 26th January, in School Centre Novo mesto, at Secondary Medical School. We hosted teachers and students from School for Nurses Mlinarska, Zagreb and School of Economic and Administration Zadar.
After a brief reception, we visited General Hospital Novo mesto. First, we went on tour round the dialysis department. Then we were accepted in surgical lecture room by Ms Simona Volf, Assistant to the Director of nursing department, and Ms Marija Košak, the Head Nurse of surgical departments. In the continuation, Ms Zdenka Seničar, responsible for education, presented the organization of work and the use of ergonomics in General Hospital Novo mesto. Ms Marica Parapot presented the functioning of the department for patients with kidney failure and all the specific features of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis treatment.
After luch we were greeted by Ms Damjana Papež who presented work at Secondary Medical School. The afternoon was devoted to our project work, namely, each school presented the hitherto project work. All three schools had conducted a survey on knowledge of kidney functions, kidney failure and on methods of treatment, risk factors and how to prevent the emergence of kidney disease. Simultaneously we prepared a presentation on kidney health with the first year students.
At School for Nurses Mlinarska and Secondary Medical Schools the participants also took their students' blood pressure. After the work meeting, accompanied by Mr Goran Matešić and Ms Svjetlana Ćirković, we went on a guided tour of the old part of Novo mesto and then to Hostel Situla, where our guests were staying.

On Friday, the 27th, we returned to school where we planned the final presentation of our project and agreed on the type of presentation. This was followed by some exercises for the health of the whole body and a short snack break. Afterwards we were divided into three groups and were taken to observe classwork at our school.
Ms Vida Novinec and Ms MojcaSimončič presented different ways of lifting and moving patients with the help of ergonomics. Ms Tanja Kulovec and the students of the program Nursing Assistant at the subject Home Economics prepared food for kidney patients, which we could also taste. Ms Marija Račič demonstrated measuring blood sugar with the aid of a mobile phone, taking blood pressure and the basis of hemodialysis treatment. We finished this exchanged with lunch and a concluding thought. We are all looking forward to our upcoming meeting in Terme Tuhelj in March and maybe even in Zadar in May.

Students impressions

On 26th January I , together with two teachers, Zdenka Sršen Juričević and Katijana Rajčić and two students, visited a slovene town Novo mesto due to the participation in the E-medica project. There are many teachers and students involved in the project, which I really like as we have made new contacts and acquentainces. I especially liked the fact that almost all secondary schools are located at the same place. Our school, the school from Zagreb and the one from Slovenia made brief presentations. The town Novo mesto, which we had an opportunity to discover a little bit, made a good impression on me and I am happy to have been able to learn something new.

Teachers Zdenka Sršen-Juričević and Katijana Rajčić who participate in the project The Health of Kidneys – the choice is yours, the leader of which is Secondary Medical School Novo mesto from Slovenia, decided to take three students, one of whom was myself, to the exchange to Novo mesto. We met other participating teachers and students. The trip was interesting and successful, and what is more, we made new friends. It was particularly interesting to see how the Slovenes organize their work. The most interesting thing for me was the visit of the hospital for kidney patients’ treatment, where in the presentation we found out even more about the treatment process. I am happy that our teacher took me to this trip as I got a chance of getting new experience, knowledge and contacts.
