Third students exchange in project
"Algae – usage in pharmacology, culinary and cosmetics"

(January 16,  2018)

On Tuesday, January 16, 2018, a third exchange of students in the project was carried out at the Medical school Varaždin with the theme "Algae – usage in pharmacology, culinary and cosmetics.
Our research team (Tea Vujnovac, Martin Petrić and Matea Hranić under the mentorship of prof Nataša Vuković) welcomed our friends from the School of Nurses Mlinarska and Medical School Ante Kuzmanić from Zadar.
Following the welcoming speech of principal Mirjana Grabar-Kruljac, we had a tour of our school and briefly informed our guests about the organization of the school and courses that can be enrolled, as well as cabinets and laboratories where the practical part of the teaching is held.
After this introductory part, students and mentors attended practical classes of Pharmaceutical Technology with Cosmetology, where Marija Novak (master of pharmacy) together with 3rd grade students (pharmaceutical technicians) demonstrated the production of grain grease for the protection of the lips and the antiseptic hand gel.
We also attended a very interesting 2nd year class (physiotherapists) from the Massage course, where the students demonstrated massages of the forearm and hand, while in the second part of the class our guests and their mentors tried out the presented massage techniques on students of class 2d. All this was supervised by teacher Ksenija Janjšević.
During these activities we have arranged all the details about the design of our joint project, which will be presented on the 11th exhibition in Tuheljske Toplice, from 8 to 11 February 2018.
The Sremska Mitrovica School also participated in the project, but for objective reasons students and mentors failed to come to Varaždin. The tasks that were set at the beginning of the project were all successfully done together. Each school researched a certain effect of algae. The School of Nurses Mlinarska, who was also the project manager (mentor Đurđica Stanešić), was engaged in the research of the presence of algae in culinary medicine, Ante Kuzmanić Medical School from Zadar (mentor Verica Elveđi) studied the role of algae in cosmetology, while the Draginja Nikšić Medical School from Sremska Mitrovica (mentor Jelena Janjić) was involved in medical research and the effects of algae on human health. The Varaždin Medical School (mentor Nataša Vuković) studied importance of algae as dietary supplements and their pharmacological effects in the detoxification of the organism.
After all activities, final arrangements and preparations for the 11th exhibition of 'Dani E-Medica 2018' we had lunch. Our visit ended with a pleasant short tour of the Baroque town of Varaždin. After the tour, we said goodbye to our dear friends, eagerly awaiting our reunion at Tuheljske Toplice.

I loved our exchange in Varaždin, I was stunned with their hospitality and organization. The physiotherapy class is what I liked the most because we had the opportunity to feel and learn how to give a proper massage.

At the exchange, I felt relaxed and enjoyed every minute of it. I was thrilled to attend pharmacy classes which included the making of grapefruit oil and disinfectant hand gel.

Valentina Gretić

It was great experience, we could learn and have fun at the same time. I met a lot of people that became my new friends.

(14th of December  2017)

On Thursday, 14th of December, 2017, in the School for Medical Nurses Mlinarska, the second student exchange as part of the e-medica project „Algae – Culinary, Cosmetic and Pharmacological Use“ was realised. As part of the exchange, we were visited by student Antea Škalec and her mentor Verica Elveđi from the Secondary Medical School Ante Kuzmanić Zadar.

After the warm introductions, and a tour around the school and the Health Care cabinet, we took part in an Anatomy and Physiology class where the students of the 3rd grade, D class, presented their knowledge of the science, as well as of interesting facts concerning the human body.

As part of the project, the students Valentina Gretić Sadiković and Patricija Jozić, with their mentor Đurđica Stanešić, held a presentation to the students of the 4th grade, d and c class. As part of the project, we prepared and tasted various foods. This includes Arame salad and a fruit canten.

After the presentation, we tok part in an algae cosmetics workshop and made some cosmetic products using algae. Just before our guests parted, we mutually planned the arranging of materials for the 11th Review „Days of E-Medica“ and the way we are going to be presenting said project in the Tuhelj baths and spa resort complex.

Two day student exchange as part of projects
"Ergonomy 2 – Spine Health Upkeep" and
"Algae – Use in Cuisine, Cosmetics and Farmacology“ projects"

On Monday, 9th of October, 2017, and Tuesday, 10th October 2017, the student exchange has been successfuly implemented in the School for Medical Nurses Mlinarska within the E-medica projects: "Ergonomy 2 – Spine Health Upkeep" and "Algae – Use in Cuisine, Cosmetics and Farmacology". As part of the exchange, mentors and students of the Maritime School Zadar, Medical School Varaždin, Health and Chemistry School Novo mesto, Medical School „Draginja Nikšić“ from Sremska Mitrovica and School for Medical Nurses Vrapče.

On the first day,  we recieved the students and mentor from Medical School "Draginja Nikšić" from Sremska Mitrovica. After they settled in the school dormatory, they were given a tour around the KBC Dubrava clinic and its' Oxy-Barokomore Zagreb department. We were greeted by the headmaster, Dr. Dejan Andrić, who gave us a history lesson on the hyperbaric chambe, spoke of its use and service for the patients, and then arranged for a nurse to give us a tour around the chamber itslef, detailing how it works.
After the visit to the clinic, the students and their mentor were given a tour around Zagreb. They also participated in carrying out of the regular class Health Care for the Chirurgical Patient - Basics.

On Tuesday, 10th of October 2017, we were visited by the remaining students and mentors of the projects. After the due acquaintances they were given a tour around the Dormatory of the School for Medical Nurses Mlinarska by the dorm's very manager and associate. They showed a short presentation „Life in the Dorm“ and further elaborated the life and comfort of the students in the dorm.
During that time, the project „Algae – Use in Cuisine, Cosmetics and Farmacology“, in which the students of MS Varaždin and MS „Draginja Nikšić“ from Sremska Mitrovica (with our own students from SFMN Mlinarska, lead by mentor Đurđica Stanešić) participated, took place. Both the students and the mentors listened out and commented on the short presentations given by the students of SFMN Mlinarska and from the students of Sremska Mitrovica.
As part of the culinary application of algae, we made:
          - "Miso" soup
          - Arama algae salad, and
          - Canten.
The second part of the workshop is the use of algae in cosmetics. Due to the occasion, we were given a short lecture by third-party associate, DubravkaGabrić, dipl. eng. chem., and manufactured a face piling cream and a hydration gel.
The workshop for "Ergonomy 2 – Spine Health Upkeep" was lead by expert associate Tatjana Rutonić, shiatsu practitioner i and author of the book Excercises for the Spine, who shared some useful advices for spine health, and showed us some breathing exercises.
After the workshop, students and mentors got the privilige of participating in the regular Anatomy and Physiology classes, where they were acquainted with the lessons structure and the use of plastic models in teaching/learning.
Students who were not specially acquainted with EMT procedures found the regular classes of Health Care – Basic very interesting, as well as Health Care of the Healthy Child and Emergency Medical Procedures classes, where they could personally partake in some of the tasks, which they found to be very thrilling.
This was followed by the final part of the exchange, and that was work on the theoretical part of the project and assignment of further tasks (and activities) in the project.

        Thoughts...

We learned and saw many new things. We await the next exchange with much thrill and excitement.
I thank the professors and students who welcomed us in the most hospitable way!

Tea Vujnovac, Matea Hranić

We liked the visit to Mlinarksa. I learned many new things about algae in a very exciting and interactive way. I most liked the working atmosphere and postivie spirit of both teachers and students during the courses and school tour. Everybody was very generous and comunicative. The teachers and students were very engaged in the presenting of the subjects, and our very own experience.
